What is dog agility?

Dog agility is a fast, fun sport for handlers and dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes. The dog must negotiate a course of obstacles, in the correct numerical sequence, without incurring faults and while going as fast as possible. It's a little like horse show-jumping, only in this case the dog does the obstacles while the handler provides the direction. The winner is the dog and handler combination with the fewest faults and fastest time. The obstacles include jumps, tunnels, weave (slalom) poles and "contact obstacles" such as a seesaw, which the dogs must negotiate at speed. Come and watch a trial some time - your local regional director will be able to tell you about upcoming trials in your area (see Contacts). SADAA trials are almost always held in conjunction with other events (such as craft fairs or festivals) so watch out for us there.

Where can I train?

There are clubs all over the country who can get you started in agility. The best option would be to contact your local SADAA regional director who will point you in the right direction (see Contacts). And if you're too far from a club, there are loads of tips and training articles on the Internet to help you. (See Training articles)

What's with the blue dog?

The blue dog (who prefers to be called by his name : "Scamper") was designed by Manie Connoway and Lizane Connoway for the SADAA logo and our trophies (have a look at the trophies here). Scamper also appears on the SADAA title certificates and on web pages and anywhere else he can squeeze in. We're all very fond of Scamper and feel that he portrays our own feelings about agility: above all else, have fun !
